Hanborough to Oxford

Click for full-size map

The final nine miles of the route are not its most picturesque as Oxford's suburbs encroach, but the chance to arrive in Oxford by bike is always enjoyable.

From Hanborough station, continue east along the A4095 road. Take care: there is no formal cycle path here, though you may choose to use the pavement. Take the second right, signposted Cassington. This is a much more pleasant minor road which crosses the railway.

At the end of the road, turn east (left) to Yarnton, where you will join National Route 5 along the A44 road then onto the Oxford Canal towpath. From here you can either continue to follow Route 5 into Oxford, or continue on the towpath all the way, from where a signposted link will take you straight to the railway station.

Travelling by train

Hanborough station is on the route at the eastern end of Long Hanborough. Note that a few trains do not stop at Hanborough (mostly only peak time trains).

Oxford station has frequent services from London Paddington and Reading, Banbury and Birmingham.

More routes

National Route 5, which we join at Yarnton, continues north to Banbury. The whole route can be cycled from Reading, via Oxford, Banbury, and Stratford, to Birmingham and Lichfield. It is being extended to Holyhead. In Oxford you can connect to National Route 51 (for Bicester and Cambridge) and 57 (for Thame and the Chilterns).

Cyclox is Oxford's cycling campaign and has much information about cycling in the city.
